Our Story

How it all started...

On September 24, 2006, some 50 adults and their children embarked on a missional journey to open a second location of Bon Air Baptist Church(BABC) known as the James River Campus(JRC). Week after week, an incredible group of people showed up early on Sunday mornings to unload trailers and transform a high school into a place of worship.  Over the next few years, the number of people worshipping with us on Sunday mornings grew to 300. We saw a number of people come to faith in Jesus and celebrated with those who were baptized.

Along the way, we had an opportunity to purchase a property at the intersection of Route 288 and Route 711 in Powhatan County.  The existing building on the site was remodeled into a warm and inviting gathering space for people of all ages.

In 2020, the members of the James River Campus began to sense God's Spirit prompting them to do a "new thing" in the community.  After conversations with BABC leadership, the JRC leadership and members began a process of discerning their next steps in the summer of 2020.

Today...

In April of 2023, the James River Campus leadership and members presented a proposal to Bon Air Baptist Church, asking to be celebrated, blessed and released to become a new church in the community. The church voted to approve their proposal and on January 1, 2024, the James River Community Church was birthed.

Expanding the vision...

When the disciples approached Jesus asking him to feed the hungry people or send them away, Jesus simply replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”  Although Jesus was the one who multiplied the loaves and fishes, he relied on his followers to do the work by distributing the food; and the same applies to his followers today.

Whether it be feeding the hungry, providing beds for children in need, caring for the poor or ministering to those in the grips of addiction, a high percentage of our members are actively engaged in local mission mission work.  Join us!

Where we are headed...

As we follow God into what we believe is his invitation to partner with him in doing a "New Thing" in our community, we do so with our eyes, ears and hearts wide open.  Although we understand the need for structure and process, we desire that neither ever be put before the mission to which God has called us. We don't know what all the future holds, but we know the one who holds the future.

Father, As we go forth, give us eyes to see people and your world the way you see them.  Give us ears to hear people and your world the way you hear them.  Give us hearts to receive people and the world the way you receive it. Give us courage as we set out to partner with you to make a difference for your Kingdom here on earth.  May we do Thy will always.
